Largest clinical study ever reveals this app is more effective than the pill and other fertility awareness based methods

Hi there,

Hope all's good.

The largest clinical study ever conducted on the effectiveness of Fertility Awareness Based (FAB) methods (also called natural family planning) has concluded that Natural Cycles, the first app to be certified as a contraception, is more effective than traditional FAB methods and comparable to the contraceptive pill.

Details and imagery below. Do let me know if you can run this.

Thanks,

Harry

Largest ever study demonstrates effectiveness of contraception app

The largest prospective observational study* ever performed on the effectiveness of Fertility Awareness Based (FAB) methods (also called natural family planning) has concluded that Natural Cycles, the first app to be certified as a contraception in the EU, provides an effective alternative for women who are looking for non-hormonal options, and represents a significant improvement when compared to traditional FAB methods for contraception. This is the third study performed on Natural Cycles and is an important step towards substantiating clinical evidence around natural birth control methods.

In the study, 22,785 women, with an average age of 29 years, who use Natural Cycles for contraception, were observed to establish how many became pregnant within a year. The study analysed 224,563 menstrual cycles to calculate the Pearl Index for perfect and typical use of the application. The Pearl Index is a rate that summarizes how many women out of 100 may experience an unintended pregnancy within 1 year of using a contraceptive method.

Under perfect use, the app is 99% effective. Under typical use, the app is 93% effective - more effective than traditional FAB methods (with 75% effectiveness) and comparable to the contraceptive pill (with 91% effectiveness).

Natural Cycles, which is currently used by over 380,000 women worldwide,  works by recording the daily temperature under your tongue and inputting details about your menstrual cycle as well as data on urine luteal hormone, sexual activity and pregnancy. The advanced algorithm then pinpoints whether you are fertile on that day so you accurately know if and when to have protected intercourse (as such, the app is recommended for couples in a stable relationship where you are sure your partner is free from any STIs). The algorithm makes use of this data to detect ovulation and to predict future ovulation, and these predictions improve with time as users add more data.

Kristina Gemzell Danielsson, Professor, MD, PhD at the leading medical university Karolinska Institutet and Karolinska University Hospital in Sweden says "Since more and more women are choosing natural contraception as an option, we welcome that there is a certified app with solid clinical evidence."

James Trussell,  PhD,Professor emeritus at Princeton University and co-author of that publication says "This is the first study to provide typical- and perfect-use estimates of effectiveness of an app and shows the app is effective."

Dr Raoul Scherwitzl, co-founder of Natural Cycles says "The real life evidence collected in the largest study ever conducted on this method not only confirms the effectiveness of Natural Cycles but allows us to study how it is used in real life. It's a modern and innovative way of doing research that the industry wants to see more of."

Future research will be focused on studying acceptability among women by observing the impact of factors such as age, country of origin, social stratification, irregular menstrual cycles and dedication to the method.

Natural Cycles is available to download at www.naturalcycles.com, the App Store for iPhone, Apple Watch and iPad, and Google Play Store.

PRESS RELEASE: One in ten owners are allergic to their animals - Vorwerk study

Media release
22 May 2017

One in ten pet owners is allergic to their furry friend
• Nearly one in ten (8%) pet owners is allergic to their pet
• 61% wouldn't consider giving up their pet because they love it too much
• Half (48%) don't have any special cleaning measures to reduce the impact of their allergy
• Tips on how to reduce pet allergens in the home

More than half of pet owners have admitted that they wouldn't consider giving up their animals even if they were allergic to it, a survey has revealed.

Following research by home appliance maker Vorwerk*, figures found that nearly one in ten (8%) pet owners were actually allergic to their furry friends.

However, 61% said they wouldn't lose their pet because of their allergies, whilst 53% saw their pets as part of the family.

Adding to the impact, almost half of households with allergies (48%) revealed that they did not have any special cleaning measures to reduce the impact of their allergy, making it worse for their loved ones.

Dr Jill Warner, Allergy expert and immunologist, said: "Pets are the second most important cause of domestic allergy, after the house dust mite. The allergens are found in the pet's dander, hair, saliva and urine.

"The cat allergen is very small so can quickly and easily spread, often settling in dust from floors and soft furnishings, in the air and even on walls. Dog allergens are larger particles which may be the reason why fewer people show allergic symptoms to dogs than they do to cats.

"Allergen control must be aimed at areas in the home where people spend most of their time and where allergen exposure is heaviest.  In practice this means applying special cleaning measures to the bedrooms and living room at a minimum."

Dr Jill Warner's top tips for an allergy free home
  1. Keep pets away from your bed. It's important to keep pets away from your bed to avoid them from spreading their allergens all over the area where you sleep.  Use allergen-proof barrier covers on all mattresses, duvets and pillows and wash your bedding regularly at at least 60 degrees.

  1. Put soft toys in the freezer.  If your child is allergic to house dust mites put  soft toys in the freezer for 24 hours once a week to kill the mites . Wash the toy in the washing machine afterwards and leave to dry before allowing your child to play with it again.

  1. Replace carpets with hard flooring. Replace your carpets with vinyl or wood flooring as these accumulate less allergens. If you have rugs in your home wash them regularly.

  1. Vacuum regularly. Where carpets can't be removed, make sure you vacuum regularly along with vacuuming beds and soft furnishings.  It's important to use a high filtration vacuum cleaner which is able to collect and contain very small particles and clean a variety of surfaces such as the Kobold VK200 home cleaning system.

  1. Decrease home humidity by increasing the ventilation. Try to keep your windows open and use extractor fans in kitchens and bathrooms to keep the house dry and ventilated. However if you are allergic to pollen windows should be closed during the grass and tree pollen seasons.

Cleaning expert Thomas Henningsson from Vorwerk added: "It's certainly no secret that the UK is a nation of pet lovers, but there are clearly a lot of people suffering so they can live with their furry friends.

"Our Kobold VK200 home cleaning system effectively removes allergens and pet hair, using filtering systems that deep clean your home. The VK200 uses a premium, three stage filter system which captures 99.99% of all dust particles and keeps them safely out of the air and inside the dust bag.  The multiple cleaning tools that it offers mean you can quickly and effectively clean pet hair and fur from all your carpets and soft furnishings."

The Femtech Revolution

Hi there,

Hope all's good. Do let me know if the following is of interest.

Tech is transforming every aspect of modern life for women, from wearable tech to fertility trackers. Now, for the first time, Dr Elina Berglund, who was part of the Nobel prize-winning team that discovered the Higgs boson, and now the co-founder of Natural Cycles the world's first and only app to be certified as a contraception, talks about the Femtech revolution and how it can flourish.

Full details and imagery below. Dr Elina Berglund is available for interviews so do let me know if you can run this.

The Femtech revolution will flourish in 2017 but clinical evidence and changes in the regulatory framework are key, say Femtech pioneers

Tech is transforming almost every aspect of modern life for women and helping them acquire a deep insight into their body health - from fertility trackers to wearable health tech - but the Femtech revolution will only flourish when there is high quality, large-scale clinical data that demonstrates the product works, and when the regulatory framework can evolve to accommodate new trends, claim Femtech pioneers Natural Cycles who, in February 2017, became the world's first, and only, health app to be certified as a contraception for women with no side-effects.

"Femtech and, in particular, contraception is great for start-up businesses because pharmaceuticals have retracted from innovating in that space, which leaves a void that a new generation of entrepreneurs can fill and create sustainable businesses doing so", says Dr Elina Berglund, co-founder and CTO Natural Cycles, who was part of the Nobel prize-winning team that discovered the Higgs boson.

Three to four years ago Femtech did not exist, now you can use an app for contraception. Wearables are booming in the start-up sector and changing the way women interact with their bodies and self-manage their health. "Just like the boom in the fitness and health food industry women are seeking alternative ways that support their health values and body insight. Contraception has been at the forefront of feminism allowing women to make conscious decisions about their future, and Femtech is evolving this space", Dr Berglund adds.

There are barriers to the Femtech revolution, however, but these can be overcome. One major obstacle is the need for solid empirical evidence, underpinned by high quality and large-scale clinical data, to demonstrate that the product works. This point is significant and considered to be a vital asset for any brand working in Femtech. Sufficient resources need to be invested in high-quality clinical studies, which will serve as the basis for submission, approval, certification and marketing of a product. The review and approval of new Femtech products by regulatory agencies is dependent upon a trust that the clinical data presented has sufficient integrity to instil confidence and positive conclusions.

"Obtaining more research and large-scale clinical data to put a product on the market is critical to the success of the Femtech revolution", adds Dr Raoul Scherwitzl, co-founder of Natural Cycles. "The law must be able to evolve and adapt to placing Femtech products, like apps, within the regulatory framework, otherwise market access will be denied and tech innovation will stall - and that's problematic. In 2016 our large-scale clinical study* demonstrated that Natural Cycles was effective for contraception, yet the law was ambiguous as to how to go about regulating an app for contraception - the fundamental question was whether the app was a contraceptive or an information tool that advises users when to use contraception", he adds.

"If a product is not backed up by solid clinical data or medically regulated, e.g. has no valid CE mark, then it is not considered safe so why should women trust it?", asks Dr Berglund. "Trust is vital to tech innovation. We know we're dealing with women's lives here and we take that very seriously. It's proof to all women out there that properly regulated and certified tech, that is underpinned by quality clinical studies, is a valid choice - just as it is to take the pill every day or insert an IUD to prevent a pregnancy", she adds.

The current Femtech space means that information, for example the data produced by Natural Cycles smart algorithm to inform women if they are fertile or not on a particular day, can have a similar impact or intended use as a drug.

As a result, the regulatory framework needs to evolve and adapt to this trend. "We're championing a Femtech world where tech could represents the next era in women's health", says Dr Berglund. "Tech & information is the future of women's health and contraception, but quality clinical studies and the evolution of a regulatory framework is paramount. Better insight means women can be empowered to take control and self-manage their health, fertility and future with more choice", she concludes.

The Femtech revolution will help to redress the number of women in tech, still hugely underrepresented in this sector (women made up 14.4% of the workforce in STEM industries in 2015) but interest amongst women for the products produced for them is increasing because women who understand the needs of these companies can identify with their products are, of course, more likely to work for that company. "It is a lot more fun to work for something you believe in, but there is a big gap to fill in the STEM sector and the Femtech revolution will make those positions more appealing to women", says Dr Berglund.

Core Elementz: Achieving Epic Growth in Fitness Training

Uptick in celebrity athlete endorsements assisting new company

Lakewood Ranch, FL (September, 2015) – Core Elementz, a subscription-based sports, fitness and nutrition company, has achieved an unprecedented amount of growth since its inception earlier this year. It has already made an impact in the lives of many successful professional athletes and is now focusing its outreach on the youth market and the general public.

“These programs can positively impact every client’s life, not only on a physical level, but through character development, empowering individuals to reach their goals and to educate them on proper training and techniques to help them develop their craft,” said Core Elementz Co-Founder Jason Riley.  He has been working as a professional sports trainer specializing in a holistic approach to training and nutrition to deliver exceptional performance on and off the field for all his clients.

Riley noted, however, that what Core Elementz has to offer is not limited to the already established pros. “We seek to improve the athletic capabilities of today’s youth, as well as promote quality of life for those that are no longer in athletics or just looking to improve their body composition, weight loss and focus on disease prevention,” he said.

Notable clients of Jason Riley include New York Yankee legend Derek Jeter, Major League Baseball All-Stars Ryan Zimmerman, Ryan Howard and Tyler Clippard, former NBA All-Stars Vince Carter and Chauncey Billups and tennis stars Maria Sharapova and John Isner, among others. Recently, Philadelphia Eagles’ tight end Trey Burton was featured in NFLSpinZone.com, where he credited Riley as well as the programs put together by Core Elementz to his offseason improvements.

The level of training and coaching for those athletes is the same that is provided to any other Core Elementz client, Riley added.

One particular priority in the ongoing client expansion efforts for Core Elementz is targeting today’s youth. According to a recent study, less than 5 percent of Americans enjoy ideal cardiovascular health and today’s teens have a shorter life expectancy than people of prior generations. Conversely, children who play sports are eight times more likely to be active as adults than those who do not play sports growing up.

Bien cordialement,
