Center Founded By Former CNN Correspondent Launches Overseas Training
Huntsville, TX—Kelli Arena, the former Justice correspondent for CNN knows a thing or two about journalism. So she's taking what she's learned on the road, training journalists around the globe.
Sam Houston State University’s Global Center for Journalism and Democracy is hosting its first overseas training, bringing a team of journalists, experts and academics to Beirut, Lebanon.
The conference, “Media Coverage of International Justice,” will help journalists learn how to cover international courts and tribunals, which are becoming more globally significant. The GCJD is teaming with the Beirut-based Samir Kassir Foundation to host the event.
"The workshops will cover a wide array of topics, ranging from understanding legal terminology to protecting the presumption of innocence," said Arena, executive director for the GCJD and Dan Rather Endowed Chair of Broadcast Journalism at SHSU.
International Justice is just one of the specialty areas that the GCJD will focus on. The center will also help journalists who cover the energy sector, environment, politics and elections, health, and criminal justice. It will also work with governments, government agencies and other organizations to help them foster a better relationship with the press.
Housed at SHSU, the center is committed to promoting a free press around the globe.
Arena spent 25 years at CNN; approximately half of her career was spent in behind the cameras and the other half as an on air correspondent. She left the network in January 2009.
